DC for UMC retirement

Anonymous
Is it a good idea for a upper middle class retired couple to move here? Do you see current for future rules and regulations making it easy or difficult? Do you think of local culture and environment as supportive for every retiree or just rich and poor?

You wouldn’t care about our terrible schools, so might be a decent place to have a condo in a building with armed security.

Could you please provide some characteristics of what you would consider a local culture and environment that are supportive for every retiree?

Seriously, why would anybody with resources want to retire here? After 45 years, I can't wait to leave. But to each their own, I guess...

Like things to do between two extremes of expensive restaurants and free meal centers.

Yes, DC has lots of those.

DC has a lot to offer -- good restaurants, cultural events and activities, nature/trails, access to top hospitals, access to three airports, multiple universities, an international community, and a diverse population. Crime, particularly violent crime, is on the rise. Cost of living is higher than most other parts of the U.S. apart from perhaps NY and CA.

My family had been in D.C. for three generations before I was born, I have lots of relatives here, many close friends are here, etc., so I'm staying here when I retire, or at least planning to.

I don't know if I'd move to the area upon retirement without having ties here already, but if you're asking why anybody with resources would want to retire here if we already lived here, there are many obvious reasons.

These things^ make it attractive but crime needs to be addressed.

I'm only comparing it with other urban areas in major US cities.

This can't be a real post. Nobody would move here to retire.

For my parents (who never lived in the DMV until two years ago) it's because their kids and grandkids are here.

I'd do living in two areas to maximize good weather. Like Arizona in winter and Alaska in summer. I think being able to enjoy the outdoors is critical in retirement, and you really can't do that in DC for about 75% of the year.

heck no.

I would look into how easy it is to hire caregivers.
