Unimpressed with CA Tafti

Anonymous
I had the pleasure of meeting her for the first time and I question why she was reelected as CA. She struggled to offer any coherent response as to deal with the rising surge of crime other than Progressive platitudes on restorative justice and equity. How is that going to help ensure Arlington is a safe region of the DC Area???

Am I missing something, was Katcher that much of a bad candidate?

How are you confused? She clearly told you what Arlington voters want.

I was expecting a bit more nuance and moderation in her views as opposed to sticking to a hard line on crime

Katcher was really bad. He politicized a tragedy as the centerpiece of his campaign.

I still voted for Katcher, I just couldn't bring myself to support her for CA.

Someone had to try to get justice for the family. Dehghani-Tafti did not. The civil suit will be epic and the parents will pay heavily for their lack of parenting.

Yup - that in and of itself was gross.

I didn't vote for him, I wrote in Sharon Bulova

Well, Katcher admitted he wouldn't have done anything differently, so the entire thing made no sense as a campaign tactic. But I agree with you that I hope there is a civil suit that leads to a big payout for the victim's family.

To get back to OP's question, I think a good candidate could have won, but Katcher was not that candidate.

There is nothing she could have said to change your mind.

Are they suing? They seem rather wealthy and one would have thought they’d want to grieve in private and not have their kid’s contributory negligence litigated in a courtroom - especially after they allowed themselves to get exploited by Katcher during his losing campaign.

I hope they do sue. Some speculated that they need to wait until the killer turns 18 for some reason. I think the killer's family has much more to lose -- his name gets made public, as does his family's name. If a lawsuit doesn't happen, my guess is that there's a threat of a lawsuit and then a big private settlement. The victim's family has already been very public (as you noted), so not really much more to lose for them.
