Prices not listed - legal?

Anonymous
What do you do when prices aren't listed at a restaurant take-out? I just went to a pizza place and there wasn't a single sign about pricing. I was pretty pissed when it rang up to $20 and will not go back. I've been to bakeries where they have no prices listed. Delis and take out stores rarely have prices on drinks. Is there a law about consumer protection for these places? How do you know they aren't charging you $10 and the next person $5? What if the cookie is $7 and the cupcakes are $2? It seems like poor business practice in general, I'm likely to spend less and not frequent them.

I always ask first if I don’t see prices listed. I’ve walked out if it’s more than I want to spend.

It's a great way to have one set of prices for locals and regulars and then to soak tourists and people who won't be repeat business regardless

I am guessing the rule is they have to tell you if asked and the majority of places find it easier to post them. Next time ask before preserving, and feel no guilt for asking about the price of 20 or so things. I bet they find a price list.
