ID camp invitations - real vs. cash grab

Anonymous
How do you know the difference between a real invitation (I saw you play, you don’t suck, come to my camp so I can see you again), versus the cash grab only invitation?

We get plenty of ID camp invitations from schools we have never heard of and where are we now the coaches have never seen our kid play. So those are obvious cash grabs….

But what about if a coach HAS seen your kid play? Is there some way to tell the difference? Or a way for me to know how much effort to put into getting my kid to that coach’s camp? Some secret code or wording?

We’re just starting out on the process and could use some tips from the experts on here!

You could ask if the coach has time for a quick phone call. The communication should come from the player not the parent. In the phone call, the player can ask as few logistical questions about the camp. Also ask the coach where they saw me play.
A great (free) resource is Coach Renee Lopez' Facebook group "Educating Parents of HS Athletes On The College Recruiting Process". She also sells a book but the FB group has much of the same info.

Good reference. Also look at the bottom of camp emails for the ‘unsubscribe’ mention. Sign of a mass email. The only warning is sometimes schools that are truly interested will still send these types of emails instead of personalizing

Colleges have to charge for the camps per NCAA rules. My daughter went to one this summer that is probably not a school she would be rostered for but she had a blast.
