Local butcher asking for tips now

Anonymous
Went to the local butcher and they now have the swing screen asking for tips. Disgusting. I put 0% and felt zero shame. What is wrong with establishments these days? Every single job now requires a tip? Since when do you tip a butcher?

I'm with you but why do we tip baristas and not butchers?

We shouldn't tip anyone but that's not going to happen...

Why do you tip baristas but not the Amazon delivery guy?

Let's keep going down this rabbit hole.

Does tipping culture make sense at all? No.

Why tip baristas but not the IT guy who reset your password?

I'd tip a butcher if he is standing in front of me with a very large very sharp knife. I suggest you do too.

Sonic asks for tips now too.

This is dumb. Why? Do you think he’s going to chop you up?

Is the person at the butcher shop who's ringing you up the actual butcher? Or is "cashier" a separate job?

I tip a lot, but I can't see this one. The cost of butchering is built into the price of the meat, right?

Yes. A butcher is a friggin professional job with a wage. No tips.

Heck, if a barista or bartender is earning a salary or wage, I'll argue they should get zero tips too.

Goodness. That was a joke. As thick as it comes.

Sick of this tipping culture. It really has started to impact my willingness to go out. I hate the added tension it creates. And I pay in cash much more often now to avoid the obnoxious screen pivot.

I get especially annoyed when the Crumble cookie screen where I order my cookie suggests I tip a minimum of $2 for someone putting a cookie in a box and handing it to me.

But I'm part of the problem. I'm easily intimidated into paying the tip, even as I stand there and steam over it.

This isn't going away. Companies have figured out how to pass the cost of labor onto the customers in this direct way. The hiring spiel = "Yes, we pay minimum wage, but everyone averages x amount of tips per shift..."

It is possible that these features are built into the POS tech that these purveyors are using. Owners might not be able to reconfigure the design and may not be aware of it or are just stuck with it.

Definitely true that tipping is build into pos software, but you can turn it off. The line of who to tip is so arbitrary. I try my best to avoid any type of counter service place that ask for tips, but it’s not always possible. Pushback is getting bigger and bigger.

Last week, I went to a coffee shop with a friend. My order was taken and I tipped a dollar on a $5 bill. The order was wrong and I waited for 20 min and received moldy fruit. They refunded my order and I ordered something else. You would think there should be an option for the worker to cancel the tip request for the second go around, but there it was again, a request for a 25% tip. It’s just so irritating.
