PNW Schools

DC is interested in heading west - Cal schools are in consideration but also those in PNW. STEM interests ( CS, Engineering)

U Washington is obviously a good school ( CS especially)

What about U Oregon or Oregon State (for STEM)?

UW accepts almost nobody OOS for CS…literally only 50 kids total out of 1200 are admitted OOS.

Engineering and other STEM is not as extreme.

OSU is solid for STEM & CS, stronger than UO, and Corvallis is a better town than Eugene.

Probably not the PNW he wants but Washington State is very good at STEM, too, and a much easier admit as an out of state student

Seattle University is another option if the draw is seattle and the indistries there: lots of internship oportunities

Definitely apply, at least as a safety. My kid was accepted to OSU in 2 days. It was great to have one under her belt.

We toured Seattle University when we were out there - could be a good option. There were areas sponsored by Amazon and Microsoft in the CS building and lots of opportunities for internships in that area.

Yes.

Depends on what the kid is looking for in a school and what their academic stats look like.

Small engineering class sizes at Gonzaga.

DS got into Oregon, not Washington, both OOS. Oregon had a very high acceptance rate, so it’s a great safety.

In what way is Corvallis superior to Eugene? I’m willing to be educated.

OP here - Oregon has a pretty high acceptance rate. Def seems like a good safety.

And with STEM major, I am hearing school raking matters less.

I haven't been to Eugene in many years and have never been to Corvallis, but I Googled and got this:

Corvallis is more quiet and in a sense ‘tame’ compared with Eugene.

The people are also what you could call more ‘folksy’ and are really friendly, but the two cities are pretty similar in culture these days.

If you want more quiet and toned down than Eugene—Corvallis is probably for you.

I love it here. I’m a lifelong native, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else on earth.

Eugene is also nice, but it is bigger and rowdier in a sense. It carries some of the things you could expect in a bigger city that aren’t for everyone.

It should be said though that Corvallis is growing in the last decade by quite a lot.

The bulk of Corvallis’s social hub used to be centered mostly in the about 15x15 square blocks that make up downtown Corvallis.

That has changed. Now you’re seeing chains like Planet Fitness pop up here.

This area used to be largely small locally owned businesses, except for Winco and Safeway.

To be honest, I’m not sure how I feel about us letting more corporate chains in.

I work with a couple of CS grads from Gonzaga who are very good.

+1 Nobody OOS is getting into UW CS. Also know that UW engineering is direct admit to the eng school but does NOT guarantee you admission to your desired major---just that you will get into "an engineering major". So if your kid is set on MechE or BME, know they will have to fight and maintain a near 4.0 to major in what they want to

Reed college (in Portland) has very strong physics, math, etc.
