Can we please talk about this and share our kitty litter successes?
What have you found that: - your cat likes and will use - doesn't track everywhere - doesn't produce a cloud of dust - is easy to clean What litter boxes do you like? Not like? What else in your setup leads to litter success (not just in kitty use, but cleanup)? [I still have yet to achieve litter enlightenment with my cat. I tried to get her to use the Tidy Cat Breeze system. I even called the Purina hotline, but no dice. And unfortunately, a robot is not in my budget right now] |

Dr. Elsey's

| Fresh Step's Outstretch. It is the only litter I use now. |
| We use Fresh Step Extreme (Hawaiian Aloha scented). It does get tracked all over though. |

| Tidy Cats Free & Clean + top entry litter box. I love the top entry so much. |
| I have a Maine Coon who needs room for her big ass, so we use a big Rubbermaid container with a hole cut in the side for entry. The lid definitely helps keep the smell in and reduces litter flying when she’s aggressively burying. We just use the standard Fresh Step litter, nothing fancy. |
| Worlds Best Cat Litter from PetSmart. Excellent clumping for urine. No smell. Very little issue with tracking if there is a good grippy rug in front trick is to not break up the clumps when scoping. 3 cats, 2 boxes, one cat is too good to cover her poop. |
+1 for Worlds Best. We tried Dr. Elseys but I hated the big heavy clumps it created. I also like Tidy Cat Breeze since it doesn’t track at all but it’s not so great when the cat has chronic diarrhea… |
| I used to use worlds best (the corn based kind). I got a couple bad bags that attracted bugs/had bugs in the them so I swapped to clay for a bit (just the cheapest unscented clay litter available). I’ve found it less dusty than World’s Best and neither of them smell if I keep the box tidy so I’m sticking with clay for now. Only issue is that it’s heavy. Fortunately my cats don’t seem to care what kind of litter I put in their box. |

Another large-and-in-charge cat over here (20lbs, fit as a fiddle -- he's just tall and beefy). I can't do an enclosed litter box with him. I've tried several. We now just do a very simple open pan on the floor and he's waaaaaay happier and always goes IN the box, whereas before he'd sometimes not. So if you have a cat who just won't use the enclosed box, I recommend just doing a regular pan.
I don't use liners. I just scoop it daily and then replace the litter and wipe out the pan weekly. It never gets too gross if I scoop it every day. Sometimes I'll scoop twice in a day if I see it and think of it. We take out our kitchen trash daily so I just do it before we toss that so the litter can go out in it. We recently switched to Dr. Elsey's from Worlds Best Cat Litter. I am THRILLED that Dr. Elsey's really does not track that much. Still a little near the litter box itself, but that's it. It is 100% worth the switch and I wish I'd done it sooner. The reason I didn't is that my cat really like World's Best, it clumped really well, and it was 100% flushable (like really, actually, will not screw up your plumbing flushable -- it fully dissolves in water and quickly -- I'd scoop it and let it dissolve for about five minutes, and then I would flush it and you wouldn't see any litter in the bowl, it just turned the water yellowish-brown). We keep the litter pan in a spare bathroom so this made for super easy clean up and I really didn't want to give it up. But there were two reasons I did: (1) World's Best is very sandy, tracks everywhere, even puffs up into clouds of sand when you poor it in or when the cat kicks it -- it gets freaking everywhere no matter how well sequestered your litter box is, it was always on the cat's paws, it was really gross, and (2) it's corn-based and it started to attract ants. So I'm now firmly anti-World's Best even though my cat loved it. He likes Dr. Elsey's fine as long as I scoop every day and don't miss a day. |
Same. My very large boy does much better with an open pan on the floor. We had a very large closed dome-like one, and he hated it. |
This is my favorite. It’s not perfect but imo it’s better than other options. |

open litter box but it sits in an open Amazon box (top flaps cut off) with a small cut out in the side so they can hop up/into the box. The Amazon box keeps the litter spray to a minimum.
We use Tidy Cat Instant Action. |
