Books where you needed to know what happens to the characters at the end

What book or books had you hanging on until the very end because you had to know how the characters ended up?

Not really thinking whodunnit or what happens at the end, but how the characters turn out.

Examples that had me hanging on are Fleishman Is in Trouble and the fourth book of the My Brilliant Friend series.

The Slow Horses books by Mick Herron. He will often disable a character in some way - like they get shot or fall off a roof etc and then he doesn't let you know they're ok for a VERY LONG time, sometimes not even until the end of the next book in the series.
