Help with order of skin care products

Anonymous
I would really appreciate tips on what order is best for various skin care things. I’m turning 50 and am trying to up my skin care game but feel like I’m sort of random.

Currently the things I have in rotation in the AM: the ordinary buffet, drunk elephant vit c, drugstore HA serum, Paula’s choice ceramide under eye product, and a sunscreen. I don’t do all of them on the same day and I’m sort of randomly deciding which two to use and then doing sunscreen last.

PM: prescription trenitoin and Nivea in the blue tin.

Any suggestions?

Tretinoin and sunscreen are the only ones here that matter. And drink lots of water. Moisturize as needed.

This looks fine, a little much in the AM but fine. SPF, retinol and a good moisturizer are the ones that matter.

You would only apply retinol AFTER moisturizer if you actually intend to lessen the absorption and hence efficacy of the retinol.

I was recommend to sandwich my trentoin to lessen irritation. So yes, sometimes you need to take the edge off "the efficacy" of the retinol.

Skin doesn't breathe, it absorbs....

I've heard since it's all absorbed, the order doesnt really matter anyway.

This.

That said, I'll share mine (I'm 42 and starting paying a lot of attention to skin care at 40 and I have to say my skin is looking great.)

Night:
oil cleanser, scrub off with a washcloth (I use LUSH Ultrabland)
mild cleanser washed with water to get everything else (Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing gel)
Paula's Choice BHA exfoliant everywhere
spot treat with Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA treatment (on my jawline where I would sometimes break out)
Retinol
Clinique Dramatically Different Mouisturizer
Kielhs Avocado Eye cream under eyes.

Morning:
Wash with water
Apply physical SPF

This works for me. In the past ive experimented with vitamin c, with other serums with "actives" and they all made me break out. This regimen makes my skin look smooth and young and healthy. Retinol and SPF made the most dramatic difference, once I started using them.

Cleanse
Tone
Serum
Moisturize (I use a moisturizer with SPF. Order for sunscreen depends on if it's chemical or physical)

At night, I cleanse, use retinol, wait, serum, moisturize.

Side question: I never wear any makeup. No need for toner, right?

My derm said the general order was

Clean
Treat
Moisturize
Sunscreen/makeup

My understanding from something I read somewhere is that locking the products in with some kind of occlusive moisturizer helps them be more fully absorbed because less evaporating/drying happens once you seal them away from the air. In my younger days, this strategy would have been disastrous for my acne-prone skin, but I am 42 now and my skin is dryer, so I do it. In the morning, it's the facial oil. In the evening, I use Aquaphor.
