Do you think Messi will be able to bring more hype to soccer? Miami is the worse team in the MLS and MLS is not a good league. How soon before the honey moon is over and they start asking why he can’t score or win games?

Pele, Cruyff and Beckenbauer all played in America. Didn't do all that much.

Messi will be a temporary curiosity, but it wont' be sustainable.

MLS is turning into what the North American Soccer League became - a retirement home for aging stars. I don't think he'll be around long enough for fans to wonder anything. A few hard tackles and he'll realize his mistake

I think with Messi there will be a temporary boost. DH and I have always been soccer fans (even before we met) and used to go to New England Revolution games all the time. There was a spike in interest when Beckham came to LA but it was just temporary. I kind of suspect the same thing will happen with Messi.

The problem with Messi though is the the does not currently, and might not ever, speak English very well. He's also just not a very big personality. Most of the foreign fans that came with Messi will likely leave with Messi once he retires for good.

Pretty sure that won't happen either. The league has invested too much into him to let teams get away with blatant hatchet jobs.

Plus, have you seen how he was treated in La Liga? There are many, many compilations of him getting absolutely butchered by Real Madrid and the likes, particularly under Mourinho.

It's his retirement, people. Nothing magic will happen. He's being paid to grow old as a mentor to not-very-good players. Adjust your expectations.

The signed a few others to be there with him (Busquets, Alba, maybe more coming) and the coach is familiar. Soccer is a team sport of course and one person, even Messi, can't magically make a team good BUT he can create moments and enough moments will provide some wins.

I'm planning on just enjoying the opportunity to see him play in person.

A foreign player choosing his team and getting paid by one of the league's television partners tells you just how far the MLS is from being a real league. It would be like Wemby deciding that whe wanted to be a Knick and that the supermax wasn't enough so TNT would have to throw in more and everyone just saying ok.

Can tell you do not understand how big Messi is. Name any player in any sport or any celebrity in the US and Messi is 5 to 10 times more popular.
There is no one in the world who comes close to his popularity.

Yes Messi got abused in La Liga and champions league by the best defenders in the world. MLS defenders will get owned by him even this late in his career
