TIHSST…slot for Arlington students?

Anonymous
How many slots are allocated to Arlington? Are they divided among the middle schools or just APS in general?

I want to say there were 1-2 kids per middle school, but I can't remember exactly.

I’ve heard the same thing but wonder what the official quota is

It’s 1.5 percent of the 8th grade class. That’s how many spots. Typically 4 or 5.

If there are 4 or 5 qualified applicants. Some schools have not filled all their spots in recent years. Kenmore didn’t use them all two years ago. Just not enough applicants who met the minimum requirements.

Is that also true for APS? I didn’t think there were that many for APS.

The requirements aren’t that tough now.

Algebra 1 + certain GPA. There were many qualified kids at Hamm this year.

There’s plenty of qualified kids at any of the middle schools. But they do not always apply. They have to apply and take the test.

I believe there are something like 85 APS students attending TJ across all 4 years. So about 21 per year. APS provides transportation if you get a seat.

At least 2 from Kenmore are going next year.

That is definitely less than 1.5% of 8th grade class. I think they aren’t using all their spots. 4 or 5 from WMS and Swanson this year. Definitely 4-5 from Hamm and Jefferson last year. There have been a few APS sophomore admits too.

There were 4 spots for Swanson this year. Not sure about the other schools. Even the Swanson guidance counselors didn't know how the APS spots were going to be allocated until the whole process was finished this year. TJHSST controls the entire admissions process, even for Arlington.

4 from WMS too I heard.

Is there any place to find the number of Arlington students that applied, by middle school? That info has appeared on these boards for FCPS, but does APS release that info? I checked APS and TJHSST website (and VoE) but didn't find anything. I suspect that I don't know where to look, but it might be in a different data set.

My kiddo applied during pandemic and got in (I think bc the numbers were low during the pandemic). I have a kid applying this year, and my guess is that the numbers are significantly higher...though the APS numbers tend to be sort of lowish.

How does it work if you’re an Arlington resident, but your child attends private school?
