| I'm not getting anywhere on my job search. It's getting really depressing. I don't know what to do at this point. |
| Have you reached out to recruiters? |
Yes, I have. And my network. And I've applied to many roles. Sigh... |
|
How long have you been unemployed?
Can you shift gears and step back to take a step forward? Like, accept a lower role or pay? |
|
stay positive OP. Good things will come. You cannot devote 8 hours a day to the job search. Earmark 1-2 hours to do something productive
- fully update your linkedin profile with new skills, education, certs - interact on linkedin... like something, post something related to work, a passion project, research, a book you have read. - if you are applying for roles outside your direct area of expertise, ie you are stretching, change your resume to a functional or functional+chronological format. Google this. Start customizing your resume for every job you apply to (as opposed to using the exact same resume for 50 job postings) - use ChatGPT to help you do the above - look up free or reduced cost interviewing and resume and job search sessions in your area. local college, libraries, community centers - connect with your alumni association, or see if your alma mater provides career services to those in transition - create a calendar to punch list of this kind of stuff daily, check things off the list you will feel more productive. After two hours log off. Go for a walk, exercise, read a book, cook some good food. |
| I was out of work for almost three years and it nearly made me crazy. Hang in there. |
You have to provide a lot more context. Sigh... |

Been there, OP. I’m in a very niche career that has few jobs and low turnover. And we weren’t able to move due to my spouses job. Health suffered greatly and finances were terrible. Toward the end, I pivoted to a somewhat related career path that had generally lower pay but more openings.
Got a job and am happy. Keep your hope up….something will happen! |
| What are looking for? I cannot find decent candidates to save my life. Drowning in work, need to hire 3-4 people. |
|
I had to switch to a lower paying role to get cash flow moving once unemployment ran out, OP. There's no shame in that.
I took a job that paid $30 an hour. It was still in my field. Have you applied for "remote" jobs? Have you set that you're open for work on LinkedIn? |
| Do you work in a field where you can get a temp job? There are temp firms that place people with certain skills. If you can get temp work in your field supporting short-term clients then it can look okay to cover a gap on a resume while you find the right job. |
