Contractors messed up window well install…

… and now the edge is leveled with soil while - from my reading-up - it should stick out above the soil about three inches.

They worked so hard…

Also, the surrounding soil and cement now slopes towards the well because they installed it too deep and ran out of room to level surrounding area correctly. I specifically asked for the slope to go from the well and down so as the water runs away from it…

I mean - do they now need to redo the whole thing??? Project cost is 4k and I need to work 1m to make it. I don’t get it - how can a very reputable company mess up like that?

I also feel bad for the three workers that were digging the whole day taking turns…

This seems fixable. If wood, can you not just add to the top of it and then bring in more dirt to pound in/slope?
If it is concrete, can you not just put in a top wooden piece (or two) as a nice edge?

It has to be fixed fast because it's currently a great way for water to drain from your yard into your home. With these July storms, I'd want them out asap

It’s a one-piece metal well. Comes with a lid - thin metal grid and plastic lid… so I can’t attach anything to make it stick out more…

Yes, I need this fixed asap.

I’m just appalled how a good company with hundreds of 5-star reviews can mess up like that. I feel bad for the workers that obviously did not get proper guidance.

I’m thinking ahead about my options… if the contractor refuses to dig it out again an and reposition, is there a way to get my 30% deposit back? They contract covered the material. I expect they will try to NOT redo the work and try to persuade me that it’s ok if the edge is at the same level as the soil… I don’t look forward to my meeting with the project manager…

I guess if something can go wrong, it will go wrong.

I know. So the ridiculous. The worker with huge innocent eyes told me — it was impossible to slope it the other way!

For starters, lower the soil next to the window well, then dig a trench around your window well that has gravity yo drain the water away from both house and window well. This might require moving soil in that area. I hope you don’t have plants to move…

There are window well extensions and risers for the corrugated metal wells if that's what you have, google window well extension

If the well is at ground level, I would not trust that to be 100% water proof the same way that a solid sheet of metal is

Thanks! So they are digging out the new metal well thing today to reposition it correctly. Project manager accepted it was a mishap.

The old one was really bad and we were told it can be broken through by the pressure from the dirt at any time. When they dug it out - it had huge holes, thinned out metal, and corrosion all over.

I thank everyone for the ideas here. I leaned so much about those window wells!

And I found this resource (see window well diagram that shows slope and 2inch min edge sticking above the soil) helpful. I used it to explain to the project manager why the project needed to be redone.
