Random question - any “dress code” for kids at Kennedy Center show?

Anonymous
Taking my kids to see an afternoon showing of the Lion King later this month. Wondering if it’s ok for them to wear their everyday clothes, or is it disrespectful to show up in shorts at such a nice venue?

Plenty of people go casual, especially kids. I don’t though and like to teach my children it’s respectful to dress for special occasions. No one will think twice though if you’re in shorts.

You'll see the full range, from fancy/dress up clothes to business to shorts and t-shirts. Your kids are fine in everyday clothes

Why would you not have them wear something nicer than play clothes? Part of the experience is the experience, including dressing appropriately.

When we went about 5 years ago most everyone was dressed up. DD wore a fancy dress. I don't recall seeing active wear and sneakers, but did see shorts and polos for boys and sun dresses for girls.

I think it's fun to dress up if you already have something and the kids are comfortable.

Nice sundress for a girl (bring a cardigan) and a polo or button down with dress shorts or pants.

We don’t have “dress summer clothes” beyond one first communion suit, which would only fit 1/3 of my kids anyway. I plan to have them wear a collared polo short sleeve shirt, but the shorts will probably have to be athletic.

We could barely afford the tickets so can’t afford new outfits for all on top!

You’re projecting your values and priorities onto another. You have no idea how old these kids are or what makes an experience special for them.

I was indirectly telling OP that her kids should wear nicer clothes. They'll notice if they're one of the few kids wearing play clothes.

Put an email out to your community listserve. Say your child outgrew and wondering if anyone had a pair of khaki pants before you purchased.
I just cleared out closet and donated 2 pairs of khaki pants and 2 khaki shorts.

This time of year they are typically on clearance at Carters / Osh Kosh and you should be able to pick something up for less that $10.

I put my son in nice khaki shorts and a polo shirt. Comfortable, but not daily wear.

What? OP doesn’t need to blast her neighborhood asking for clothes to go to the KC.

An afternoon matinee for Lion King will be filled with families. Polo shirts + shorts for the boys will be normal attire at that show. No need to scrounge up used khakies.

Then do that. Take them. It's such a wonderful experience. Don't feel pressure about clothing. I've seen everything from ball gowns to jeans.

Or I could just go and enjoy the show. We are in the cheap seats anyway - you have probably never been up there, but they are filled with people dressed more casually. It won’t be a problem.
