what computer to buy for high school

Gonzaga - they just say computer, no tablet.

For every visit we've seen all kinds of computers. What's a good solid laptop that will last 4 years?

get a MacBook Pro. Anything else probably won't last the four years.

Apple’s laptop lineup has changed a bit. The latest Pros, 14 and 16 inch, are probably overkill.

I’d recommend the MacBook Air 13 or 15 inch.

A MacBook Air would probably hold up as well, but they are a bit more fragile and aren't as resilient when it comes to dropping. But if you get the protection plan you should be good to go.

Unpopular opinion: not every kid needs a MacBook/Apple product.

If you are looking for a solid computer that will last and cost half as much consider a Lenovo. We've owned several and they last 5-6 years without any issues.

Bonus: most schools do not issue Macs to teachers and often kids who have Macs have trouble accessing all of the things that teachers are using.

Ask the school which platform is most common. At our HS, 90% of the kids have Macs and the tech folks are most experienced with Macs. The school does not provide computers but you can purchase one through the school to get a group discount, but only a MacBook Air is available through the program.

Not every kid needs a Mac, but if Mac is the overwhelmingly more common tech, it might be easiest.

Ask what the kids typically get. My child's school is predominantly Macs.

The new Macbook Air 15" (M2-based) is a really nice laptop. At the end of four years a laptop is going to be pretty long in the tooth, though.

You might consider getting an older Macbook Air (like the M1-based 13") and then getting a newer machine in two years' time. Your kid will probably appreciate a more powerful computer later on than they will right now -- so save now and spend later, if you need to.

+1 This is a fact...Lenovo has tons of deals and work well. But you can try https://www.backmarket.com/en-us for some really good deals on whatever you buy.

Can someone recommend a Lenovo model that would be equivalent to a MacBook Air M2?

My previous job issued Lenovo computers. Perhaps I just kept getting lemons, but none of them lasted much longer than a year. And I would also echo that if most of the kids have a Mac, and the tech support on campus is Mac leaning...that would be the move IMO.

Ideally both but I'd rank performance higher.
