Tell me what to buy—family of 3 plus dog

After living abroad without a car, we are returning to DC and will purchase a vehicle. We want something not terrible for the environment (maybe a hybrid?). We will be parking on the street in Mt. Pleasant, DC. We like the idea of a small SUV or station wagon. We are not car people, but will need one for a work commute. What can we buy that is reliable, not a “hot car” for stealing airbags and stuff.

Suggestions for what would be good for s family that wants a comfortable, reliable station wagon/SUV for street parking. Hybrid preferred.
