Weekend family trip to beach from DC?

Anonymous
Our beach plans were scuttled by our hosts coming down with the shingles. If you were going to drive to the beach from Silver Spring and spend the weekend with a 10 year old where would you go? Where would you stay? Looking for the weekend of July 21. Just mom, dad, and kid. Trying not to break the bank. A pool would be lovely.

I mean where ever has availability to be honest. Rehoboth is a good choice you just may not be ocean front.

Right. We are scrambling last minute because the other plans fell through. We’ve been spoiled by not having to plan since our family usually hosts us.

Delaware beaches will be hard at this point. You might want to check out Newport News and other places around Norfolk, or Southern Maryland. The beaches aren't as good but there is often more short-notice availability and they won't gouge you as much as the DE beaches will in high season.

The Bethany Beach Ocean Suites Residence Inn has availability that weekend. It's ocean front on the boardwalk. That's what I would do. Despite what people like to say on this board, there is also plenty of availability for 1 and 2 bedroom condos if you search on VRBO.

I like OC bc even if it's not oceanfront, it'll be on the Bayside and walkable to the ocean.

Honestly a real beach is a very long drive for just a weekend. I'd go to Colonial Beach.

Psh.

We do weekend WV ski trips and weekend beach trips. Well worth it.

Colonial beach? Just go to a pool.

No there isn’t. There is a random Wednesday for $1k/night.

Most VRBO will not entertain two night stays, so you are looking at laying $400/night for probably 4 nights which works out to $800/night.

I mean, you have saved thousands over the last decade having family host you. Spend some money and take vacation time and head to Hilton Head or something.

I would look for a hotel with a pool in Rehoboth. All the Condo/house rentals will be booked up.
We go frequently, some things my 11yo enjoys aside from the beach and pool is paddle boarding and kayak rentals on the bay side in Dewey Beach. Bike riding at Gordon’s Pond or the bike trail from Rehoboth to Lewis.
Sunset cruise out of Lewis is nice to do too. You take your own food on the boat, it’s very relaxing and it’s beautiful on a nice night.

We did Avalon a year ago and it was a decently okay drive and plenty of hotels to stay at.
