Problems with living in a large home

Anonymous
You never want to leave!

Prior to this we've lived in apartments and smaller homes and were out all of the time.

In a large home, you don't want to leave, it's so weird.

Anyone relate?

Hello. I'm rich, and it's glorious. Anyone else want to share about how glorious they find it to be rich?

Omg it’s driving me nuts because our homes are both large and so many things get lost. We have too much stuff and too much space and it just always seems to get put in the wrong spot and then I can never find it. And then my cleaners also put things in different spaces and I can’t find them. Yes this is also a my family problem because they’re all bad about keeping their stuff in their spaces/ the correct spaces but I wish I had a smaller house so there wouldn’t be as many possibilities!!

And yes, I know this is a complete rich person problem. I’m just venting!

Big house ≠ rich. There are huge (relatively) cheap houses in the middle of nowhere, and (relatively) expensive, (relatively) small houses, like mine (current value a bit over a million, 1800 square feet - yes, I know there are many more expensive houses, but it's about twice the average price in the US, and smaller than average). I like leaving our house in part because there's so much to easily walk to.

But congratulations on having found a living situation that suits your preferences!

This and how everything is more expensive to repair, replace, clean, mow, trim, air condition/heat, etc. More bathrooms mean more plumbing bills.

I mean, my house is small and I love it here. I would not want to live in a large home because it would take more time, energy, and money to clean.

My legs hurt from all the walking I have to do between the kitchen and the bedroom!

What's the definition of large by DCUM standards? DH and I built a 5,000 sq. ft house about eleven years ago with the intention of having kids. That didn't pan out but we love our house. With just two people, it's not hard to keep the everyday spaces clean and tidy. We do have a cleaning person every two weeks and she takes about five hours to do the main floor and bedroom level.
Now the problem with the large home is the exterior maintenance. Even with a lawn mowing service, there is still a great deal of weeding and general upkeep that's needed outside. I didn't grow up doing lawn work so it mainly falls on DH's shoulders as he's very meticulous about the yard. I know he gets annoyed that I don't always jump into action and start weeding or that I don't enjoy planting flowers, etc. It's just not my thing.
We've considered downsizing now that kids are off the table but we've grown attached to the house and enjoy the larger main rooms.

My house is not large but it’s inviting and I never want to go out unless it’s to walk in the woods, kayak or rock climb.

I cook at home and have friends over.

Same. Not about size but comfort. We have 2500sq ft but across 3 levels so dh, kids and i can all be in separate spaces.

We moved from 2500 to almost 4k. I preferred the smaller home. Dh insisted on the big home with high ceilings. So wasteful. I think 2700 would be perfect for us, family of 4 with one wfh and one partly wfh. Kids leaving in 6-8 years and I want to downsize.

We moved from a 1200sq ft apartment to a 2200 sq ft house and it feels so luxurious. As does the nice yard.

I long for a cozy cottage on the shore. Big homes are soulless. Cottages are like a warm hug. All white kitchens in McMansions are cold and piercing.

Probably because you couldn't find each other to make a baby in that massive house.
