| Is the s in Nicoise silent? I pronounce it since that is how I learned French. It does sound better with the s silent though. |
| I’ve always pronounced it nee-swazz |
| Nee swaz |
| PPs are correct. |
| You pronounce the "s" at the end because it is followed by an "e." French major here. |
| Nee swahz |
|
No, because it is followed by an “e.”
The last letter is silent. |
I've seen saying NEE SHWAH, apparently incorrectly, for many many years.
|
| Knee - swahz |
| I don’t if I can avoid it 😅 |
Same |
| The s is not silent cause of the final e as others noted. However, I think the ending can sort of get swallowed up if it’s in a sentence in the way that native French speakers seem to blur many words together such that a whole phrase becomes two mumbled syllables. |

French person here.
Neess-wazz. It's a mixed salad that comes from the city of Nice, pronounced "Neess". The "c" has a cedilla, which means you pronounce it like "ss". And "oise" is pronounced "wazz". |
Who knew! |
