BOE Rally

I am surprised nobody has posted about the BOE rally in Rockville June 27th. The optics were stunning. A huge crowd of POC trying to reinstate the opt out and a small number of white liberals counter protesting. The scene was amazing and shows that this will be a very complicated issue going forth.

A group of homophobes and anti-trans people protesting in liberal Montgomery County? Irrelevant

The optics of POC advocating for oppression of others are...not great.

A huge crowd of Ethiopian Orthodox parishioners who were told by their priests to go and the priests themselves manipulated by white conservative trolls. I spoke with several Ethiopian neighbors and they didn’t understand what materials the curriculum included. They thought materials would be sexually explicit rather than showing a family with two dads having a picnic.

It is WAY too simplistic to say that adhering to religious beliefs is homophobic or anti-trans. I’ve been following this debate. I haven’t heard one person say to change the reading list. They simply want the chance to have their religious beliefs respected, too, through opting out.

This would be a different story if protesters were calling to remove the books. They are not.

- mom who would not opt her kids out, but can respect the choices of other parents

To the above PP. a small group of people for some reason think mcps is going to teach their 1st graders about gay sex. To those of us that are rational we know that’s not true. But having books that depict other families other than a mom and dad have been introduced as reading material. I’m ok with my kid having books about. different families. As a rational human I know my kids will be who they are irrelevant of books they were exposed to at school.

+1

“My African American” didn’t go over well here.

How is it homophobic and anti-trans when all they are asking is to be able to opt out? They are not asking to have the courses eliminated

You're ok with that, which is fine, but some other families might not be ok with that.

I just can't imagine they will cave to this kind of bigotry. The issue is not complicated at all.

I agree with you and especially the optics. Not only were the protesters POC but muslims in hijabs and religious clothes. The whole thing is a mess.

I saw some posters that said they were protesting against getting rid of the opt out for family life and sexuality which still exists and isn’t under question. Seems some were misled.
