Anyone notice the orangeconstruction barriers on the shoulder right near the Takoma Park exit on 495 as you head towards White Oak and 495? Every time I pass it, the hole there seems to be getting larger and larger. I definitely notice it now every time I drive by it. Is it safe? Is anyone paying attention? Any info on this. The hole seems to be very deep, so I was wondering if it is a sink hole forming. Imagine one day you wake up and 495 is closed because the road collapses due to a giant sinkhole everyone fell asleep at the wheel at addressing. Traffic would be snarled for a while.
Fwiw, even google maps was able to catch an image of it. This was 8 months ago, and it’s definitely bigger now (look at the bottom):

| Sorry, as you head towards White Oak and I95*. |
| I don’t think we really get sinkholes like that. More likely it’s some storm water system failure, like a drain that got blocked or whatever and caused a bunch of erosion. |
| Sink holes are so scary. Give me anxiety. |
It if it keeps eroding and the asphalt is compromised, then what do you call it? The hole is bigger now and is the is closer to shoulder line, if that makes sense. |
| Holy S drove by it again today. It is massive. How are letting cars drive in the right lane next to this? Does anyone know what the condition is for the Earth below the right lane of the highway now? It's scary. And let me guess....rather than take preventative measures, no one is going to do anything until the problem becomes catastrophic and it costs a lot more to fix or someine gets hurt. It's huge! |
| Where did you see it? There’s a sinkhole forming in our back years and we are along the 495 before takoma park |

Think that’s bad?
On the outer loop just past Connecticut Ave, the road bed near the spot where rock creek bends around nearest the road is totally undermined. It’s basically hollow underneath the road. We walk our dogs in the woods near there and you can see it. It’s scary looking. |
