It has been a few years, but my Dad had a decent experience at Fairfax Nursing when he was recovering from an injury. The PT staff was very good, but the rooms showed their age and the food wasn’t great - but, his condition improved and he was able to return to his assisted living facility Make sure you stay on top of things to get a planned discharge date. Facilities are notorious for keeping patients as long as insurance will pay and then suddenly rushing their discharge.

Thanks

I’m glad your Dad did well! Thanks for the input!

Because there are some nicer options, Fairfax Nursing > Woodburn, it's probably nothing more than being a snob to say Woodburn is not acceptable.

Yes, the one in Alexandria. What happened ?

There's a skilled nursing facility at Vinson Hall in McLean. My mom is a Vinson Hall resident but it's open to non-residents. She was there for 2.5 weeks after spine surgery and it wasn't 100% perfect but overall it was great. I live locally so was able to be there constantly so I saw exactly what was up with how it's run. It's small so not overcrowded or too busy for the staff to keep up with.

p.s. on Vinson Hall SNF -- it's not Arleigh Burke, even though that's what comes up in the Google search. Arleigh Burke is for residential assisted living, not short-term rehab.

I have a relative at Vinson Hall. It isn't perfect, but overall it is a great facility. My relative went for a short-term injury, but I'm now optimisic that his life will be better if he remains there.

Basically something similar to the movie I Care A Lot. They even went to court to try to have her deemed incapacitated, have their own attorney deemed her guardian, and try to have the beneficiary on her life insurance changed to THEM. My aunt was only there because she was waiting for a lung transplant, and was 60 but due to her trach she couldn't talk. Nothing else was wrong with her, but she trained medical nursing care. She wasn't in memory care. Her stuff would get stolen constantly. She was neglected. And when they served her with papers for court, she literally had a heart attack and died.

They killed her. I am not making this up.

I also second Arleigh Burke -- the Medicare covered part is called the Community Building. It is part of Vinson Hall in McLean. They only have 10 or 12 beds. But they are private rooms and 100% covered by Medicare. It is small, but the staff is really loving and it's great if you have a senior with cognitive impairment who needs rehab.

I have heard Goodwin House is also one of the best in this area (Arlington and Alexandria).

Make sure to ask if they have private rooms that are covered by Medicare. I have heard that a lot of places are semi private.

Been to several with my parents and the Virginian was the best. It’s very small though so there aren’t always beds available. We would always have the CM at the hospital reach out to them when they were doing a search.
