Email school or let it go? (grading issue)

Anonymous
My son is in middle school and had an A in his English class until the last week of school when he was absent and couldn't turn in a paper assignment on that Tuesday. He got a "missing" and a 50% which brought his grade down to an A- (92.3%). He handed it in the next class on Thursday (last class of the year). I saw it was still showing as "missing" last week so I email the teacher and nicely asked if my son turned it and if she was able to grade it. She never turned my email and his report card came in the mail and is showing the A- still. Should I let this go? My son was bummed but now in summer mode and doesn't really care anymore. It just feels unfair to me. Thanks!

Was there any way to submit the paper electronically on the day he was absent? If there was, then I’d let it go.

If it were high school I'd say to push back. But for middle school, I'd let it go

Middle school English grade doesn’t matter. Let it go!

Was it an excused absence? Why didn’t he hand it in the next day or send it electronically?

The paper's due by the deadline. That's all.

He did. He handed it in the next class which was Thursday due to block scheduling, but the teacher didn’t change it from missing (50%) to the actual grade.

OP - I would resend the email and cc the principal. The grade should be changed.

He waited two days. He could have gone to the teacher with the completed assignment the following day even though he did not have the class.

OP, thanks, you are correct. There was no way to hand in electronically. He was sick with strep throat on the Tuesday it was due. He handed it in during the next class period on Thursday.

There could be other factors that prevented this. Maybe his first period was far away from that class. There isn’t enough time in between classes to do that usually. Either way, it was perfectly acceptable to turn it in on Thursday due to his absence. The issue may have been that grades were due on Tuesday so she had to put 50% in. But now it could absolutely be changed.

I’m so tired of hearing this. It matters to some kids and families. He wanted the An and his parents was not missing. He shouldn’t have been left with a 50% on it. Ridiculous.

OP - when did you email her? We also had a teacher that never returned emails. It’s not ok. Email her again and stay the course. Also, cc the AP or the principal. It’s very easy for them to fix this mistake.

This should read “he wanted the A and his paper was not missing”

If it is important to your son, there is no. harm emailing the principal. I am just shocked that a 'missing' still gets 50%!

Grades are meaningless nowadays.
