Just saw a segment on the Today Show that you should not use a water bottle with a 3, 6 or 7 in the triangle on the bottom. (I am pretty sure those are the numbers...) So I pulled out my Sigg bottle again. But now I read that lining of Sigg bottles is also hazardous! This is a comment from someone on Amazon on Siggs:
"The Sigg water bottle is made out of aluminum. In order for aluminum to be safe to drink from, the inside needs to be coated with something, usually epoxy. So you are basically still drinking out of a plastic bottle! Also, if this bottle get's dented, the inside coating will crack without you knowing it and then aluminum is being leeched into your body. " Is glass the only option? Has anyone used a Klean Kanteen? Other ideas? Thanks! |
| Rubbermaid - #5. |
| I bought myself and my husband Kleen Kanteens right after I got pregnant and we love them! They are stainless steel- completely inert and non-reactive- and water tastes so much better out of them than out of the plastic bottles I used to use. The plastic spouts are made of the safer #5 plastic, which I'm fine with, but if you really want to avoid all plastics you can order them with a stainless cap instead. I wash them in the dishwasher every week or two, but other than that they don't need any special care. The only downside is that the air vent does make a squeaky noise if I take a long swig, but as long as I take smaller sips it's not a problem. I highly recommend them! |
| What's the danger with a #7 plastic bottle? I drink from my Nalgene bottle all day long -- yikes! |
|
#7 is usually polycarbonate, which leaches BPA, a known endocrine disrupter.

You have to take Amazon reviews/posts with a grain of salt. Don't believe everything you read there -- I've made that mistake!
You can read about the SIGG aluminum and liner in the FAQ section of the SIGG website and draw your own conclusions. |

14:37 clarifying: don't believe anything you read, period, if they don't cite sources and/or are anonymous!
Not meant to bash Amazon specifically -- just that when we read these random comments online, sometimes we forget to have the proper filters in our mind. Without sources, it's all hearsay; without attribution, it could be written by a competitor, a disgruntled ex-lover, an obsessed fan, etc etc. |

This morning on the Today show, the website www.iatp.org was specifically mentioned as being a good reference. The link for "Smart Plastics" is:
