Detroit - Where to Stay?

What are some safe and convenient areas to stay in Detroit when visiting? Any specific hotels or AirBNBs you'd recommend? Will be visiting as a family of 3 with a young teen.

What are your main places you will be visiting? How many days?

Ferndale or Royal Oak are close-in suburbs that are very central, have good spots to eat. You are going to be driving places anyway (except in rare circumstances), so having a central location for the area is good. But depends on what you are doing to an extent.

We're hoping to visit some museums - art, Motown, Ford Museum, Charles Wright Museum... Probably staying for 3 nights or so.

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. It's in Dearborn and will probably take a whole day if you do both or the factory tour.

Still think Royal Oak or Ferndale would work well then. Should be a number of reasonable 2 or 3 BR houses to rent in both cities. In Ferndale you will want to stay west of the train tracks and north of Marshall (8.5 mile.road) if you can.

Why would stay in Royal Oak?! Stay at the Detroit Athletic Club or the Marriott at the Ren Center.

Without a kid I would say yes to those, but with a kid I think it's probably better to be in close-in suburbs. Food options more family oriented, and everything out there is super easy in terms of driving, etc.

If you’re thinking an Airbnb, don’t watch the movie Barbarian

Stay downtown unless you're going to be doing stuff in the burbs

This does look nice
NP

I've stayed at the Marriot. It’s okay which means average but good enough for what I needed.

Oh, meant to add, I've been on vacation where I stayed in the suburbs of a city and it wasn't the same feel. And since most of your itinerary seems to be downtown except for Henry Ford, it sounds inconvenient.

Exiled Michigander who travels to Detroit with young kids. There is no reason to stay in Clawson-adjacent, Huntington Woods-forward, blah blah blah. Just stay downtown. Plenty of great restaurants, coney dogs, museums, Ubers, close to Belle Isle, etc.

Ha you are a native if you know the proper term for someone from the state, and the HW reference is evidence that you at least went to the zoo when you were a kid.

I have been convinced that a downtown stay is a good idea. Definitely hit up Eastern Market.
