According to the latest Dranesville District email, the SB will be addressing McLean HS capacity and facilities upgrades:
- Summer renovation of all McLean HS bathrooms - Roof work - Installation of stadium bathrooms Maybe McLean HS will finally zip it. Email also indicates all schools in that district will be trailers. |
Some basic maintenance work over the summer to keep the roof from caving in again and patching up the non-functioning bathrooms is welcome, but hardly a substitute for the overdue addition the school also needs. There’s no reason for anyone there to “zip it,” even if Tholen and Frisch try to make it sound like more than it is. |
| They'll find some other reason to play the victim, I'm sure. With the high taxes they love to brag about paying they can never be satisfied. |
McLean should be close to the top of the renovation cycle. Maybe the early 2030s since FFX co taxes are so low. |
No one should be satisfied with having a high school with the fewest permanent seats of any HS in the county at the same time as: - the school is already well over capacity and will continue to have trailers and a cheap modular - the TJ admissions changes mean more kids from Longfellow go to McLean and fewer to TJ - the county continue to both prioritize and authorize new housing that feeds into McLean HS in Tysons, West Falls Church, and downtown McLean. I didn’t start the thread, but if you’re going to suggest some routine maintenance work over the summer is equivalent to what the county has been spending at other schools, including schools like Justice and Madison that weren’t in the renovation queue, some of us will point out again that’s not the case. |
Nothing in her email says all schools in the district “will be” (i.e., have) trailers. |
Converting to gender neutral? |
| I have an honest to goodness question. Why does ‘McLean HS is WAY over capacity’ come up all the time, when there are other schools (Centreville, Chantilly for example) that are even more so, and no one makes a peep about any of it? |
Because no one wants a boundary study to be redistricted out. The Chantilly boundary is relatively compact and the neighborhoods want to stay there. The school has been overcrowded for decades. It has managed to function successfully. Honestly, though, Chantilly boundary area has almost no new construction. The overcrowding may resolve itself. |
It’s not “for example.” They are the only two high schools in FCPS that are currently more overcrowded than McLean based on the # of permanent seats. FCPS has already budgeted for a major renovation and expansion of Centreville soon. PP addressed Chantilly - people who live near the school don’t want to get moved to other schools much further away. And much more additional housing is in the pipeline in the McLean district than in either the Centreville or Chantilly district. This isn’t by chance as it’s based on specific decisions by the Board of Supervisors to concentrate multi-family developments in areas that feed into McLean (and Marshall). Maintenance work over the summer at McLean doesn’t address the current overcrowding, much less the additional students who will eventually attend the school with the growth in Tysons, West Falls Church, and downtown McLean. If the county isn’t prepared to invest more in the school, they should put a moratorium on the development. |
McLean is the #3 school in the state and in top 100s, and pays some of the highest taxes in the country. Disgrace and disgusting |
There's a poster who is shocked and appalled by the McLean bathrooms. She paid over a million for her house and she cannot believe that high school students avoid the bathrooms at McLean! Just like at every other high school... |
| Good job, all your DCUM whining worked. Now go get a job. |
They have been horribly negligent SB members. The basic maintenance OP describes is just more of the SB’s “bandaid” approach to the school they hate the most: privileged McLean. But we already know how much racial hatred the current school board harbors toward Asian people. They even put it in writing. |
You can stop trying to play the race card. McLean's status has nothing to do with race and you know it. |
