Ozempic and Military Personnel

Anonymous
Tricare does not pay for Ozempic for weight loss. However, I can't find information whether the military forbids the use of Ozempic for service members, and whether it would raise red flags for medical readiness and the Periodic Health Assessment. Unfortunately, the Service-specific Health/Wellness Program has not been helpful at all especially for menopausal women. I am seeing a civilian provider (self-pay) who thinks Ozempic would be a good choice but I don't want to break any rules. TIA.

Ozempic is not FDA approved for weight loss. It is for diabetes. People using it for weight loss are using it off label.

If you want a weight loss drug, you want Wegovy. As your provider if they will pay for Wegovy instead.

Tricare will not pay for any GLP-1s for weight loss.

OP, no one can answer your question here (well I highly doubt it). You need to look at the regulations. I'm willing to bet they do not yet have guidance on this. They of course want everyone to lose weight through a balanced diet and mandatory PT, combined with fitness tests.

I have searched for regulations or guidance and cannot find them so they may still be trying to figure this out.

Why don’t you try to get Wagovy for weight loss? Ozempic is for diabetes.

Same active ingredient for both medications. Ozempic is $900 and Wegovy is $1,300
