DD got a B in intensified geometry...algebra 2 next year?

I thought I heard somewhere that you need a B+ or higher to progress in the intensified track. I need to prepare myself for a meltdown if DD is going to have to re-take geometry because she got a B instead of a B+. Does anybody know if she needs to re-take or if she can go to Algebra 2?

Of course she can go to Algebra 2. But, probably want to stick with regular not intensified. At least at W-L our experience was that Alg 2 Intensified was a weed-out class. DD who got As in intensified Alg 1 and Geometry in MS had to drop out of it after the 1st quarter along with several others and it was the same situation when DS (2 years older) was a freshman. It was unfortunate because it really killed DD's confidence in math.

Oof. Good to know, thanks.

You can take intensified again but if you can, you should hire a tutor or be ready to provide a lot of support yourself

The prerequisite for Algebra 2/Trig Intensified is a B or better in Intensified Geometry OR B or better in Algebra 1 and Geometry.
The prerequisite for Algebra 2 is a C or better in Algebra 1 (or Algebra 1 Intensified) and Geometry (or Geometry Intensified).
You can find these listed in the Program of Studies.

Getting a B in geometry is fine, and she needs factoring skills from Algebra 1 the most. If she did that well, she should take Alg2/trig intensified. With colleges being test optional, it is important she get to Calculus senior year.

Geometry is very, very different from Algebra, and the data I've seen shows Algebra 2 performance much more tightly tied to Algebra 1 performance.

Review it throughly whether or not you stay in the intense version.

What actually killed her confidence was the higher levels of math too soon. If APS and parents would stop pushing the limits on their kids' math, they would steadily progress and not hit that "weeding out" situation.

IF she expects a top-tier school in engineering or other prestigious STEM program.
Calculus in high school is not a pre-requisite for success or for admission to a quality 4-year university.

Extracurriculars are not a pre-requisite for admission either, however, having them is helpful. Colleges are interested to see if students have challenged themselves by taking the most rigorous courses available to them. The overwhelming majority of students at competitive colleges have taken calculus in high school.

Line up a tutor to help when needed. WL math department has kids who do tutoring on the side and it was a big help to my DD. Her math teacher told her about the program. Worth every penny!

Same experience at Yorktown, although my daughter didn't want to drop until almost the end of 2nd quarter and it was too late.

+1

It’s a race to nowhere.

There are also kids that do well with the accelerated math progression and benefit from taking calculus as seniors or being able to take AP Stats senior year if they had calculus as juniors. Acceleration also expands options for science courses and related summer programs. To avoid the sharp ramp-up in MS math, APS could offer accelerated math opportunities in 5th grade to make for a smoother transition.

Geometry is sort-of an outliner topic in math.
