Please tell me Sidwell Summer gets better…

Hi all - signed up at Sidwell summer for a different experience and the school has a great reputation. My easy going kid told me it was very disorganized - much of the day spent really not doing much but sitting around. Looking for some good experiences with this camp - hoping it was a first day fluke and they will get their grove in coming days. I’ll call if things don’t turn around in the next day or two - but please share any good feedback. I thought drop off and pick up were a bit chaotic - but again, chalked it up to first day of camp.

It depends on which camp your kid is in - there are so many. Do you have a contact there you can email / phone. I have found in the past (2 kids, multiple summers at Sidwell) that if there is a problem like this it's best to let them know asap so they can sort it out for your kid (and the other kids).

First day can sometimes be about touring, getting to know the space and rules, etc. I don't have familiarity with Sidwell Summer, but I'd give it a day or two.

Are they doing the CIT camp by any chance? That was a disaster last year, for sure.

Yes! CIT. do you know if they will allow us to move to another part of the camp?

We did Sidwell Summer for three years and stopped. My daughter had a wonderful first year, got bullied the next two years. When it happened the second year in a row, it was clear that either they didn't care or they didn't have their students under control. She's in various camps all around the area all summer long and this is the only one where these interpersonal problems went unchecked.

You will need to ask them where they have space. I would phone.

For what it’s worth my kid had the same experience at another CIT camp last year. This year they’re doing actual work (for SSL hours because they are 14) and they are busy!

It gets better as folks suggested - call with your concerns - especially if about a specific incident or program. I have always found them to be responsive with even small requests so send an email or call.

Sadly it’s awful. My daughter did one week last year and will never do it again. They basically did nothing.

Sorry your daughter had a bad experience - was she a CIT too? Is she doing a different program this year? Better?

Anyone know of other good CIT programs for 13/14 year old?

My kid liked the SSSAS CIT training classes. She also got CPR certification that week.

Good report on Handwork CIT at Sidwell - DC - daughter loved it. Was able to work with a variety of different classes and ages of campers, enjoyed the different staff members. She is hoping to be staff next summer!
