Are all kids adhd/asd

Anonymous
Every single kid I know has these diagnoses, including my own. Why is this?

Not all. My three are NT.

With 1 in 38 for asd and about 1 in 11 for ADHD you will likely know kids with a diagnosis.

Seriously? Every single girl you know has a diagnosis? The vast majority of my daughter’s sports teams, dance class and Girl Scouts are NT. Only 1-2 girls in each activity I’d say aren’t NT.

My son is ADHD/ASD and he gravitates towards friends and activities with boys that are like him. So yes I know a lot of boys with diagnoses. But that is skewed.

It's also possible your friend group does have a slightly higher % of kids with ASD/ADHD if the parents skew older.

Do you mean that most kids have both if they have one? If so, I see this a lot also. I think they are so closely intertwined that most kids with one have at least some traits of the other. My DS “only” has ADHD and a severe language delay diagnosis but I’m sure if I wanted to get an ASD label, I could. The DSM for ASD in particular seems very imprecise to me.

No, but with the amount of screen time all these kids are getting, they will present as if they had ADD or ADHD because it saps their ability to hold attention (mine too, I'm well aware!)

My 4 yo has never been on screens, but has very clear attention issues. Devices can contribute, but I am sorry, they are not the root cause for all cases.

Screen time has always been highly regulated at my house. Yet, two of my three kids have ADHD as does my DH who, like me, grew up pre-cable TV and only had 4 channels on TV. Three of my four siblings also were diagnosed with ADHD after my kids were.

Not at all. Most kids we know do not have these diagnoses and there's only a couple that I suspect might need an evaluation at some point - but they might not. I have to wonder what your circle is like.

You are merely repeating the ignorant drivel you read and hear. Stop spreading misinformation.

I can tell you that the slightly reduced attention span caused by too much screentime has NOTHING to do with the highly debilitating, lifelong attention issues of serious ADHD. My teen cannot drive safely by himself because of his attention issues. I can assure you that the average over-screened kid will be able to learn to drive without problems.

Since this is the Kids with SN and Disabilities forum, it stands to reason people here know a lot of kids with diagnoses and even multiple diagnoses.

My ASD DD does not have ADHD/ADD.

DD, myself, most of her friends do not have the ASD diagnosis. At least one does, and another probably could have it depending on the diagnosis doctor (toeing the spectrum).

ADHD is often a comorbidity to a variety of other diagnosis as well. For us it's dyslexia.

DP. Actually, I think you're underestimating how much other children are harmed by screens so that they look similar to your DC.

As for learning to drive, you are aware that many teens are choosing not to learn. And other teens are driving 100+ mph.

Why tf are you on this board if your kids are all nt? Seriously what is wrong with you?

It's also possible that you're doing a great job of parenting your ASD/ADHD kids, and that you look for parents with a similar style to yours, feeling like it's a connection, and not realizing that it's good for your particular type of kids, so you end up with parent friends with similar types of kids.

Similarly, you might be gravitating towards setting that meet your kids needs, and finding a more than average number of kids with similar issues because their needs are met there too.
