APS Extended Day waitlist

Anonymous
We just got word that our DS is on the waitlist for APS extended day. We are enrolled in the morning before-care program, but ~#25 on the waitlist for aftercare. This is shocking to me since the Kindergarten class will have maybe 75 students in it (Tuckahoe)

Does this mean we are completely out of luck? Or will APS hire more staff and be able to clear the waitlist and offer us something as the school year approaches?

We were put on the waitlist this year (22-23) at Discovery. We started the year around number 20 and never made it off. I called a few months in and we had moved but never got off. I didn’t get the sense that they were concerned about having waitlists. We got priority for registration for next year and got in.

I wouldn't expect that you'll get in at that number on the waitlist. Try to make an alternate plan now.

I heard some schools have space limitation (vs. staff shortage) so it’s not like they can expand the capacity by hiring more staff.

Sorry it’s tough, especially there are not many alternative options for regular aftercare. Maybe YMCA?? Good luck!

Does number 6 get off the waitlist?

How would someone answer this with certainty?

I dont understand what the K numbers have to do with your reasoning?

The downside of the way they do registration now is that kindergarteners have a harder time getting in. I do think they should prioritize K-2 kids who need it over 3-5 kids, but I also think that get complicated and would make people unhappy.

I do think that next year, they'll take your waitlist spot into account? I can't remember exactly, but it's worth checking.

Each school has different ext day waitlist.

Is anyone aware of any other aftercare options for the Tuckahoe/Nottingham area?

Seems like we haven’t had waitlist issues in the past, and so there aren’t any obvious alternatives for this area like the Y.

It also seems like no one in Extended Day is interested in making this program available for the parents that need it, but that’s a different problem.

I have a kid at Tuckahoe and have taken him to the school break camp at Scramble (in FCC) on early release days that also happen to align with the FCC calendar. (There is some overlap between APS and FCC schools). I believe they also have an aftercare program there w/ bus for kids coming from the FCC elementary school. I was told they could possibly accept APS kids, but there was no transport set up. Maybe if enough Tuckahoe/Nottingham families banded together they would expand to offer an aftercare program for those families too? It’s worth reaching out, the camp coordinators there are very nice.

I believe they offer snack, quiet study space, plus the play area.

Thanks for following up!

Anyone know if there's a way to see where you are on the wait list without having to call in? I'm interested in seeing if your DD moved up any meaningful amount
