Summer AIM prep class

Anonymous
My rising 6th grade got invited to an AIM pro summer course. Is everyone going into AIM invited to this? Or has she been identified as needing help? (She’s a strong student going into the math magnet).

Of course we already have plans so I’m now concerned about not being able to participate.

I wonder if this is a magnet-specific summer program. My child will be in AIM in our local middle school, and we haven’t heard anything about a prep class.

What math course did she take in 5th grade? What school is she going to next year?

Took 5/6 math and got As throughout. Very high MAP scores (270s) going to TPMS.

The AIM class at Takoma is more advanced than what is offered outside the magnet, so I imagine it's offered to all magnet kids.

The invite says nothing about magnet only AIM. TPMS has not offered this in previous years. Invite is from AEI.

The lottery now draws in a broader range of students. I assume that the class is to assist any student who is (or whose parents are) concerned about their math preparation or just wants a summer math experience.

Well, my kid is on the waitlist for magnet and will be in AIM at our local school. We have heard nothing about an AIM prep class.

It’s a two hour virtual program every morning for two weeks. That’s all.

That score is very nearly the highest in the county.

Your child doesn't need AIM, and certainly doesn't need AIM prep.

TPMS doesn't have AIM. They have MIM because they are special. It's AIM plus a bunch of separate side topics like computer programming and puzzles.

This is referring to TPMS Magnet. OP wasn't clear about whether kid was going to Magnet or not.

Read the OP.

Wow. I responded to this post the other day and my response was deleted. I don’t feel I said anything inflammatory. Now we are being censored if we opine that MCPS should have math 5/6 as a prereq for AIM? Or that OP’s kid has strong stats and will be well prepared without summer prep? Or that limited summer school funds might better be allocated toward below grade level learners rather than those identified for the magnet? How is any of this controversial?

No odea why your post might have been deleted, but if further explanation beyond the highlight is required:

Where does that line of thought end? When we only pay heed to the differential educational needs of those struggling? Reams of studies refute that.
