HS Summer Math Classe Feedback

If your child has taken honors geometry (or another math course) online in summer school, were there quizzes and test every synchronous day? And were they multiple choice? I’m asking because my child has an IEP for a disability that severely impacted their ability to draw figures and graph in geometry. They’re taking it for grade improvement but given the pace, I’m now second-guessing the decision to try.

OP that sounds intense and a bit stressful. Is there a threshold by which you can cancel your kid's registration? Like 2-3 wks in or something, just in case?

Summer school pacing can be tough for SN kids. It goes so fast if you blink you're behind.

I’m not sure but I’m hoping it’s a possibility. He’d like to at least try the class before dropping. I would like to reach out to the teacher but can’t since MCPS has yet to share any course info.

This is exactly the concern!

Summer teacher will not reach out until about 48 hours before the class. You should contact the central summer school admin.

You could ask the school counselor when you can withdraw from the class. Also, the transcript will show the highest grade received for the class.

Very helpful! Thanks!

Can you just have your child retake the class next year rather than try for summer school?

This is not a bad suggestion but it will put him behind in the math sequence. I suppose he could take 2 math classes concurrently but then he’d have to drop another course to make room in his schedule.

Thank you! I will ask the counselor.

I have a student with a 504 who needed lots of tutoring to get B’s and C’s in math. I’ve put her in a summer math session not so much because I think her grade will improve, but because I think she’ll struggle even more in the fall if she hasn’t thought about math at all for 10 weeks. Her counselor assured me that whichever is her lower grade will be thrown out, so it’s a low risk situation.

Why not sign up for a summer enrichment or preview class at MC?
