Umbrella or other shade for the beach?

Anonymous
My kids are finally old enough to spend a day at the beach. However I'm sure the sun is going to be too much for all of us (my days of sun worshiping are over!). I have never brought a beach umbrella and seems people are always just chasing them down the beach when it gets breezy.

What do you use to get some shade at the beach?

I rent an umbrella there. They are big, and heavier (which could be a problem), and they stay put better.

If you opt to buy an umbrella, buy 2 or 3 to cover more area in the shade.

Invest in some heavy ones. One year, during a particularly windy day, one flew off and a spoke ended up lodged in a guy's neck behind his head.

no lie . . .

still traumatized by it and it's been over 30 years

Totally do what my SIL does - bring a truckload of stuff with no means of carrying it and make everyone else carry your stuff and set you up. Works for her. Oh, and no one can stand her. But she has no idea.

Or you can get one of those tents, weigh down the four corners, and be sure to share with everyone. Because the party you leave out will not forget it. Ever.

We just got an LL Bean Sunbuster tent. It's bigger than I had expected it to be, but really nice and sturdy and effective. It's light to carry and comes in a drawstring bag with a shoulder strap. A bit tricky to put up the first time but once you get the hang of it not too bad. It has stakes that you can jam into the sand or sandbags that you can fill with sand and use to weigh it down.
