GW Parkway - Can't switch lanes???

Anonymous
I got on the GW parkway several miles from the McLean exits and there was NO way to move over a lane to get off due to the construction orange lane markers.
Now I know why I saw someone drive right over them once. Is it really possible that the way they have it set up doesn't allow you to change lanes for miles?? And if you are in the middle (without any signs or warnings), you simply cannot get off any exits until you get all the way down to 495?
How could they have possibly set it up this way? It's insane.

I got on at 123 yesterday. The people to my left had to stay in their lane and go to va. I assume they had the choice earlier on to pick a md or va lane. I could have gone to va, but also onto the beltway. It was actually awesome because these arseholes who think they are so much more important that everyone else couldn’t race up the va lane and Butt in front to everyone else to go to the beltway.

The problem is, as far as I can tell, there is absolutely no notice anywhere that you need to pick a VA or MD lane. You literally just end up in one, and then there is absolutely not changing. I agree it's awesome for some, but amazingly painful if you unknowingly went in the wrong lane.

The GW Parkway lane divine/construction has been posted for months, and there are signs posted on the road about which lane to stay in depending on your destination. This is a big construction effort that will take place for a long time, and has been posted about in the news.

If you didn't notice, then you need better driving awareness on the roadway or researching navigating infrequently traveled destinations ahead of time.

Suck it up buttercup! The construction goes through late 2025. GW Parkway needs to be repaved badly.

There is plenty of notice. I hope more people choose to go another way. It’s becoming a much nicer drive not having to deal with the line jumpers and speeders.

I have an old Volvo 240 DL wagon. It’s a tank. I just drive over the dividers up near the beltway exit. The middle lane runs wayyyy faster than the right lane, and I just drive in the middle until the last hundred yards and then cut across the dividers. They fold under and you drive over them, NBD. Wouldn’t recommend it in a nice car, but I don’t care about the way this one looks.

So you destroy public property and disrupt traffic patterns (likely making other lanes slower because people have to slam their brakes on when you barrel through a physical barrier when they aren't expecting it) so you can maybe save a minute or two? Just stay in your lane. Everyone switching lanes back and forth to shave time off is what causes traffic.

I'd bet $100 you're a Maryland driver.

This. I know now from experience, but there was no indication that you would not be able to switch later.

Even if this is true, you should stay in your lane and get off at the next exit and turn around.

The dividers are far enough apart my car can squeeze through. If you’re driving some huge suv then you’re out of luck.

Even if you don’t know about them - you know after the first time so what’s the problem?
