Checking your FCPS emails

Anyone else failed for the phishing attempt?
I was excited opening the email…

No, I reported the email as phishing since I knew the county would never actually show tangible appreciation to its employees! The test was in poor taste and a slap to the face on the last day of school. I’m glad the superintendent sent out an apology email (not that it made much of a difference), and I’m curious to see if there will be any changes to the phishing emails next year.

Can you explain exactly what happened? This sounds bizarre!

I figured it was phishing but was so happy to get the email from Dr. Reid.

I was not a great way to end the year.

It was horrible but Dr. Reid sent an apology and said it was unacceptable on many levels, had spoken to IT, and thanked everyone for their work this year.

Many teachers received an email this morning from the “FCPS Appreciation Commitee” (sic), that read, “Fairfax County Public Schools and Company Rewards have partnered to provide gift cards to our employees as a thank you for another successful year” with a link to log in to redeem a gift card. The email was sent as a test to see who identified it as suspicious, but the timing was awful as was the implied meaning that the county does not actually appreciate staff.

This test was in such poor taste, I can’t even….

I am so sorry, teachers.

Not a surprise, since the head of IT is a complete egomaniac jerk. They did this on Valentine's Day, too. Completely out of touch with basic kindness and discretion.

They should have sent you a (legit) gift card for not clicking on it.

I’m a bit shocked that so many people fell for it and then, rather than being properly embarrassed, started posting all over social media about how tired and under appreciated they are and how dare IT expect them to think before they click on the last day of school.

This is how hackers social engineer their way into systems, folks. They don’t take breaks. In fact, this is exactly something they would do. The gift card scam is one of the most common ones out there.

And IT departments are the ones that routinely have to deal with the problems caused by giving away your credentials to criminals, often over long weekends, when employees who fell for the scams are enjoying their BBQs and time off.

I know you teachers are overloaded, but please. This is my kid’s private data on the line. You have a responsibility as a user of a publicly funded email system to at least try to be diligent. No one is perfect but this is why IT are so targeted with these attempts. The criminals get better every single day and people don’t learn anything when it’s too easy.

Came over from the APS side to this thread to see what the chatter was. A FCPS employee made a very hysterical post about this in AEM.

Let me start out with my disclaimer: my mother and mother in law are lifelong retired teachers. I heard over the years and continue to hear based on their continued connections about how tough things are in the education field. I think schools and teachers are under resourced and underpaid.

Now that we’ve established that, let me say that I work for the fed government. Paid less than the private sector but work in humanitarian programming and am passionate about the work and its impact on vulnerable populations. Do I get fake phishing emails? Yes! Do they sometimes offer cruises or other enticing things? Yes!

What was my ten years of service gift? A pin that was smaller than a quarter. But you’re not going to see me blowing up the internet whining about how I’m SO under appreciated and work extra hours year round on some real crazy stuff and how volatile and insane the whiplash can feel when administrations change and political appointees can be real idiots. And that’s saying it nicely.

Listen, it’s called work. And that’s why they have to pay you to be there.

This lady on AEM seems relatively desperate and unhinged. If you’re going to get your panties in a bunch over this you’ve got some real first world problems.
