Health and Medicine

a friend of a friend of mine is a missionary in the Congo. She is single and has found herself pregnant by a man she barely knows. The culture there is extremely unreceptive to single mothers (i.e. the native Congolese women are sometimes killed for getting pregnant out of wedlock).
my friend writes (about this girl): "She is approximately 4 weeks pregnant by LMP. She went to a local "doctor" for an abortion and was given a pill of prostaglandin 3 days ago. Half to take vaginally, half by mouth. Nothing happened. The night before last the same doctor gave her the same meds, but two by mouth, one vaginally, and also gave her a big injection of prostaglandin (she said it was 3 vials and she thinks it was some other stuff too), and also ampicillin. Since then (it's almost been 48 hours), she has had some mild cramping, but nothing else. She is very upset. She is terrified because carrying the baby to term will end her missionary life here and this is her home, she grew up here. Anyway, I'm not sure what she will do. I think she still wants to have an abortion but she also talks about not wanting to harm the baby further in the event that the baby lives. What I am worried about is all the stuff she has already taken, and should she go see another physician, or just wait longer. I have no idea if all that prostaglandin could do something to hurt the baby at this point, or if she has succeeded in ended the babies life and just hasn't aborted yet, and then how long do you wait to make sure there isn't anything left? I have no experience in this, do you have any advice? Is she safe to wait and see what happens, should she see an OB now? It's all very heartbreaking.." in any case, any advice? She apparently did not take ru-486, but only prostaglandins. Will prostaglandins themselves cause an abortion? Should she repeat the medications again? Any thought appreciated. I will pass them on. |
| You are really looking for this advice here? That is crazy. |
| Can she fly to another country to get apporpriate medical treatment? |
