My daughter's MS spirit week had tomorow as basically wear designer or expensive athletic brands: specifically recommended Nike, Ralph Lauren, Northface, Gucci...WTH?! She says they keep talking it on announcements, she and friends (who are pretty uncool, BTW) not sure what to wear. Not even kidding. This evning principal is spinning it... again, WTH? What happened to field day, wear a school Tshirt?
Parents, Community and Caregivers, I’m writing to dispel any rumors or misinformation that may in the community concerning our DMV Spirit Day at Langston Hughes Middle School tomorrow. Our DMV Spirit Day is a celebration of the greatness of our region, and we have defined our look as your best casual and comfortable look. This week the students have shown amazing spirit and positive choices each day, and I anticipate that tomorrow will continue to be so. Our staff participates as well. We will be on the lookout for any outfit that doesn’t represent us well. We anticipate finishing the year in a very positive and joyful way. Aimee Monticchio Principal |
I don’t get it. Nothing in the principal’s post indicates anything about a designer brands spirit day. Lay off the booze. |

OP you’ve already spent too much time thinking about this. Teach your kid to recognize that Spirit Week is kind of dumb, and the dumb kids running it did something even dumber with the brand name thing. The principal is trying to walk it back and nothing about this is important or interesting and she can just wear whatever she wants.
Middle school sucks but it will be over soon |
| I and other parents can "walk it back," not care, etc. Kids are needlessly confused/anxious as school promotes wearing things they don't have but that seems desirable. It's not going to ruin their lives but is absolutely unnecessary and weird for last week of a public school year. So yeah, I'm pointing it out and complaining. |
| You know your kid or other kids at the school are making this up, right? |
DP. That's why the principal sent out an email? Really? |
| That's nuts, OP. Agree there should be no weird instructions how to dress from the school. I wish they just had uniforms, honestly. |
To…us? The principal already agreed with you and changed it. This is such a minor problem for the kids and kind of a layup in terms of parenting because there’s no confusion here. Everyone agrees the brand thing was wrong. Any kid who is “confused/anxious” about this has much bigger problems. |
| I'm confused. Your DD told you that the Spirit Day was a designer label day (which I agree is awful!) but then the principal's message said it was just a casualwear day. So are you saying your DD lied or was mistaken? Or you think DD is correct and the principal is lying? |
|
| Strange principal message anyway. I wish FCPS would have kids doing schoolwork until last day instead of staging "fun" last school week. No assignments, no computers...why even have school this week? Have kids work until second to last day, have a party and send off, be done and let teachers grade. |
| Fellow LHMS parent- mine will be out of school the next 2 days. There’s nothing going on during school Thurs and Friday so unless you need a babysitter, why send your child?!? My child is so over MS. I thought kids were going to be dressing racy or something by her message. My child could care less about Spirit Week. Teach your child to not follow the herd unless they agree with the message. |

According to the email, it's "casual and comfortable day
" That sounds like pajama day to me. |
| There’s nothing wrong with what the principal wrote. You can make that anything you want. Look your best can be your favorite outfit of any kind. |
| OP you are nuts. What made you think it was designer day? |
