hi,
I'm about 6 monts pregnant and I found out that I'm a border line anemic. What should I do. All my doctor said is that we are going to monitor that. Thanks for help.

I had very very low iron beginning at the first few weeks of pregnancy. It was so low and so concerning to the doc. that she sent me to a hematologist. I was prescribed a special iron supplement that was specially coated to ease constipation (one of my concerns) and saw the hematologist every couple of weeks for blood work and monitoring.

It explained the extreme fatigue. I know people claim they are so tired when they are pregnant blah blah blah, but my tiredness was more than exhaustion.

It wasn't too big of a deal though. My iron counts went up a little after I had DD.

Today's wash post Food section has a section on iron rich foods. Look in the lean plate club article.

Beware-I too had anemia and half heartedly took iron pills. I did not realize that the low iron can be transferred to baby, if I knew that I would have taken the supplements religiously. We found out DS has low iron too now. Apparantly what happens in utero (as it relates to iron in this case) can effect the child's natural iron stores for life.

The prenatal is not enough. Its really goofy, but the prescription prenatals contain calcium and iron, which when taken together block each other, meaning NEITHER is absorbed properly. Iron is hard to absorb and iron from plants is particularly hard for the body to use and absorb. The best source is read meat. Also, Iron needs vitamin C to be absorbed, so it is a good idea to have an orange (or OJ, NOT calcium fortified) with your iron supplement of red meat.
