Feeling very guilty re gestational diabetes

Anonymous
This is my 2nd pregnancy and I was diagnosed at 9 weeks because I had it the first time around. I haven’t been monitoring until a few days ago and I'm 19 weeks now. I feel so guilty and am so angry with myself. I’ve been having terrible nausea with this pregnancy and have been going through a lot at work and just haven’t been monitoring my glucose levels up until now. Has anyone else gone through this? I’m so scared of having risked it and feel guilty because of the baby.

I would add that I had problems with insurance in getting the meter but that is no excuse.

No one is perfect; we’re all just doing the best we can. Don’t dwell on the past; focus on what you can do today. Be honest with your OB about the period you weren’t monitoring and what readings you’re getting now. Monitor and follow any recommended regimen today. Take it one day at a time. I’m sure your baby is fine.

My grandfather was almost 13 lbs at birth. His mom had untreated full-blown diabetes. Grandpa was remarkably healthy, lived to almost 90, and never had elevated blood sugar.

If it was your first, you wouldn't even have been tested yet. Don't worry. Just start monitoring now and do your best.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am very upset with myself and that made me feel better.

It’s out of your control and you are NOT to blame. It has to do with your placenta. Do the best you can with exercise-walking May even make you feel better, check your sugars. Don’t stress. You can do this!!! Yesterday is the past no point in worrying about it. As a prior person said, you wouldn’t have even known at this point if it was your first. Sending you support!

This is not your fault. You’ve done nothing wrong. Some of us are prone to it…just do your best going forward.

Agree with all the positive messages above, and you’ve been super nauseous anyways so I doubt it has been a real issue anyways!

Are you sure you have GD? 9 weeks is before the placenta has fully formed. That would suggest you have diabetes before you got pregnant. Have you been tested for type I diabetes?

There's a very high possibility that you're actually a Type 2 diabetic. You're going to want to keep an eye on that with regular A1C checks PP.
