Infertility Support and Discussion
We aren't quite at the point of starting IUI but I like to plan things out and would prefer to set aside just in case money now. Our insurance covers diagnostics, radiology and lab work but doesn't cover the actual procedure. Can someone give me an estimate for IUI cost. I plan to use Columbia Fertility if that matters. Thanks!
$500, just for the IUI itself.
NP- so 500 is without the meds? Like if I want to up my chances one given month I just go in with dh and pay $500 instead of having sex? Do they do this?
Most clinics will make you do dx testing before doing an IUI (which can cost a couple thousand bucks). basically, they want to make sure that they aren;t doing an IUI on someone with blocked tubes or severe male factor. And the cost depends on whether you are doing IUI with clomid (which is very cheap) or injection drugs (which are more expensive).

You will need an HSG - your husband a semen analysis. Both of you will need to do a blood test to make sure you don't have infectious diseases.
Once you get these done, CFA bundles their costs (initial meeting with RE, monitoring, sperm washing and IUI + follow up visit). I had an IUI with meds, so I required frequent monitoring. The price, if you don't have insurance, was $2500, but after it went thru insurance, I only had to pay a portion of the negotiated cost, which was much less. For an IUI without drugs, I think CFA charges about 1,200, but again, it will be less once you pay your portion of the neotiated cost. You should call and verify the price - they were able t tell me directly over the phone. |
I was a CFA patient, and paid out of pocket for my IUIs, so I am 100% certain that the cost for just the IUI itself (not the drugs, not the monitoring) was $500 (payable that day). I agree that you'd have to be an established patient who had done their testing to be eligible for them to do an IUI.
Just to give you a comparison as I didn't go to CFA, SG also does a "global fee" if you are out of pocket. The cost is higher depending on the protocol, so straight inject is more than clomid+FSH, which is more than straight clomid. It's also on a sliding scale, so cycle #3 is more than cycle #2, then it drops again for #3 and subsequent cycles. I don't remember exactly but I think clomid-only is $1200 for #1, $1000 for #2, and $800 for #3 and above. Pretty sure clomid+FSH starts at $1600 and all-inject starts higher than that.
I am a CFA patient with insurance that covers meds(injections) and monitoring but not the IUI procedure. We are gearing up for IUI and were told the cost is $500 which you pay at the start of your cycle.
OP here - Thanks! We've had most of the diagnostics done already and insurance covered that. I was on clomid previously and it wasn't covered so I'm sure they won't cover any other meds. I don't know if monitoring would be covered but I assume so since they cover radiology. I'll worry about the true costs if we get to that point, but hopefully we'll have success before then. At least I know what to budget now!
We are SG patients, so, I'm wondering.... why the big discrepancy in the price? 1,600 vs 500 seems like a lot! I guess it's because the 1,600 at SG covers monitoring? Does anyone know if SG has a fee just for the IUI for patients who have insurance that covers monitoring and meds? No one at SG told us anything about that, but, I didn't think to ask either. I'm thinking that maybe SG is not the best place for IUI for us if this is the case. We could do 3 at Columbia for the price of 1 at SG.

To the 7:48 poster - The $1600 at SG does cover monitoring. The cost per insemination at SG is $695. You need to check with your financial advisor at SG to see if your monitoring would be covered when combined with the IUI, as some insurance policies will not allow you to do that.
To OP - Check with your insurance about monitoring coverage. Radiology is considered diagnostics, but monitoring is not. Your policy may only cover diagnostics and nothing more. |
