Infertility Support and Discussion

So I found out today I am compound heterozygous for mthfr.
Ob didn't say much about it, told me to talk to RE. RE said he would prescribe Folt-x. Nurse called in the rx and it was for Folgard. When they gave me the prescription it was Foltabs Prenatal Tablets. Confused by all these different names, I googled looking for ingredients. Turns out Folt-x and Folgard are pretty much exactly the same. They both have 3 ingredients: 2.5 mg of folic acid, 25mg of b6 and 1 or 2mg of b12. Foltabs has a bunch of things, includin calcium, iron, vitamin c, zinc, b1,b3 etc etc. But it only has 1mg of folic acid, and no b12, it does have 25mg of b6. Does anyone else find this strange? I called RE and the nurse said it was the same, but I then went to talk to the pharmacist and she agreed that even though Folgard and Foltabs were interchangeable, that Foltabs was the generic, the ingredients were not the same.... I asked her to give me the actual Folgard, since from what I read you need a lot of folic acid for the MTHFR mutation... So on to my second question, does anyone have this? RE said with Folgard, baby aspirin and my prenatals it should be enough to treat it. No Lovenox. I think I will have a consult with a perinatologist to see what they say... I've have 2 miscarriages after a healthy dd and don't want to go through a 3rd. Thanks! |
| I can only speak to the Folgard question. I am on Folgard because I had a prior anencephalic pregnancy. I get different versions of the same thing when I get my prescription refilled. There are many versions of this generic drug. I always look it up when I get home and it turns out to be the same thing. I think the pharmacies just give you the version they have on hand. |
| But pp, I understand them giving me the version on hand, but what they gave me had 1mg of folic acid instead of 2.5mg. Would you be comforable taking that? |

I took OTC folic acid on top of my pre-natal. When my RE found out I was pregnant with multiples, he made sure I had upped my dose to at least 2 mg. I was above that with the FA + PN.
Lovenox/Heparin aren't simple drugs to be on...so my RE tried to manage my (only heterozygous) MTHFR mutation relatively conservatively with FA and BA. BUT...I had two previous pregnancies, both of which ended in miscarriage, but had strong placentas and we knew that at least one of the m/cs was due to chromosomal issues. So the RE had something to go by...hence the decision to treat moderately. HTH |
| FWIW, even 1mg is a LOT of folic acid. Isn't the usual amount for prenatal vitamins much lower than that, like .4mg? Also bc it's water soluble, any extra just gets peed out. Maybe that is why the generic is just as good, if both have more than your body needs. |

My regular prenatal has 1 mg
And with this condiion you need extra. |
