black mucous in nose

my sone who just got over a sinus infection seems to have black streaks in his nasal mucous when we blow his nose. is that dried blood from a nose bleed, dirt or something else?

he's has nose bleeding before when he used nasal sprays but it was never black.

Coagulated blood, as during a heavy menstrual cycle, can appear very dark, perhaps almost black. But if he just recovered from an infection, it's possible the coloration is a reaction related to that ... Probably good to monitor and have it checked out.

If he's been someplace really dusty or around a lot of smoke it could be that. Is he old enough to do a sinus rinse?
