Strange man around my house

Anonymous
About 30 minutes ago, a man pulled up in front of my house in a tan van with no markings that had a ladder on top. I did not find it strange at first because I live in a townhouse complex, and people often pull up in front of the house when they really intend to go to the neighbor's house. The man got out of the van and was wearing a shirt marked "CABLE TV" on the back, but there was nothing else on it (such as a company name).

He walked up to the door, but did not ring it. He then also walked around to the back of the house with a few things in his hands (pliers? Couldn't see). Then he got in his car and just sat there.

I was afraid he was scoping out our house to rob something, so I made the blinds move so he could see that there was someone in the house. Only then did he knock on the door. I turned on the light, but I did not answer the door or say anything.

Am I wrong to be paranoid? What company sends out a person with a shirt that says "CABLE TV" and no company name?

In general, I'm paranoid, but that sounds too weird to me. I definitely would not answer the door, and might take down the license plate numbers if you can.

He pulled off when the dog was distracting me, I wish I had gotten a look at his license plate. Neither his van nor his attire looked anything like a professional.

Why not trust your instincts and call the police so they can come check him out? And take down the license plate, too.

As they say, "See something, say something." That's what led the police to the Times Square bomber a few months ago. Better safe than sorry.

I think I will do so. It was actually my MIL's house and I am not sure if she had been expecting a maintenance man. Just got off the phone with her and she is not.

Call your local police and report what you saw, just so they're aware of it. If anyone's house is burglarized, it'll give them a potential lead. They may also send a patrol car through the neighborhood periodically.

Do you have a neighborhood listserv that you could report this on?

No, no listserv. Will be calling the police non-emergency line now.

It's 311 if you are in Montgomery County.

I try to take a photo with my camera phone of people like this and their vehicles, just in case...

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'm calm now, emergency over.

Its definitely good to report things like this- glad that you did. I agree with the See Something Say Something slogan- it certainly can't hurt.

Yes, or email your neighbors or the HOA, if you have one.

17:11 here. I'm not the OP. I meant, "Yes" as in I agree about the neighborhood listserv comment.

something almost exactly like that happened to me when I lived in Springfield-except he attempted to push the door open...I did call the police after he left-I was freaking out bc I had two napping kids inside. He walked to the back of the house and I assume he saw a sleeping child on the bed and left. Scary. Got an alarm system shortly after.

OP what did you end up doing?
