Non New Yorkers Moving to Florida East Coast

Anonymous
We are middle-aged - younger than retirees but no liner with kids - looking into moving to the Florida east coast year round. We are from the south and would prefer to move somewhere with there are also some southerners and not with people who only come down from the north for the winter or vacation. Any ideas?

Find the poorest parts of FL.

Jax? St Augustine? Do you like the more northern part of the state?

We took a weekend trip to Cocoa last year and really liked it. Don't know where transplants are originally from in that town.

You will find people from all over the country (and the world) all over Florida. There is no place where everybody there comes down from NY for the winter. If you investigate a community or neighborhood you should be able to determine if the people have diverse origins or hopefully there are a few from the south who will make you feel welcome. It would be tough to figure out exactly where people from other southern states settle in Florida, I don't think there is a general registry with that info.

Does it have to be east coast?

Jacksonville, Jax Beach, Crescent Beach, Melbourne Beach, St Augustine, etc Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach

St Augustine is getting overdeveloped. Restaurants have over 2 hour waits

If you don't mind the gulf:

Cedar Key, Steinhatchee, anywhere along the big bend has a lot of former southerners

Also....look along the St Johns River

What about Boca?

Too expensive and full of northeners.

1-2 hours north of Boca is much better for what OP is looking for, so many great options there. Even going all the way to Orlando, soon connected to the high-speed train line.

In Florida, the rule is that the farther north you go, the further south you are. Your people are in Jacksonville, not Miami or Boca.

That's not the east coast, tho

Plenty of places on the Gulf coast that aren't very New York-y. Just avoid Sarasota and you'll be fine.

^ Also, you don't want to live year round on Cedar Key. It's an awesome little island, but it's SMALL.

I've lived in Sarasota for two years, I was born and raised in the DC area. People I've met who live in my community are from NY, NJ, Canada, Sweden, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois, Texas, Indiana, I could go on but you get the idea.

There might be a lot of NYers in the Tampa area due to the Yankees spring training facility being there. There might be a lot right here in Sarasota but how is that affecting anyone's quality of life?

On the other hand, it is probably a good idea to deflect anyone and everyone from moving here because we are totally full at this time, check back again later.

Sarasota *USED* to be visited primarily by Midwesterners.

Then those dadgum New Yorkers started invading.

Stick to your lanes:

East Coasters - the East Coast of FL is all yours
Southerners - Panhandle to Jax
Midwesterners - Gulf Coast from Tampa South
