How do we get ACPS to change the Encore decision?

Do we hold the school board members accountable for not managing the superintendent and her subordinates? Do we organize parents? What makes the most sense? I have no confidence they will do anything!

What exactly is the Encore decision? I think it affects the teachers in an annoying way, but I don't think students will have a big difference in their experience - they will still have their encore class.

No they won't. For what it's worth, I found out some schools do not offer the full portfolio of encore. For example, Dr. Z at Lyles Crouch which is touted as "the epitome" of a "top school" in ACPS doesn't have instrumental music. I heard that at Mount Vernon students can choose vocal music or instrumental music, not both. I think all students should have the same opportunity for the same curriculum at the elementary level (for example, our school doesn't offer Spanish and I would really value that as part of the curriculum). I heard teachers are driving across the city and just being treated poorly from their employer. Another parent actually tried to argue to me that is what management does! I am a manager and I am not abusive or demeaning to employers nor do I change their job duties right before contracts. ACPS needs to be more transparent about the scope of the issue. What teachers are being asked to serve multiple schools? What schools and students were not receiving the state requirements for encore? ACF was violating state law by not providing equal opportunity to those students. I heard that some students for example were not receiving PE 2x a week as required by Virginia Department of Education.

This School Board, like past School Boards, seems unwilling to provide oversight over controversial ACPS decisions but instead will reflexively side with ACPS against teachers / parents. So, I only think this will be altered to the extent ACPS decides it is in its interest to do so.

You should go ahead and get parents in alexandria organized and at the next school board meeting.

But that's not as a result of this most recent decision - it's been like that.
