| In addition to the horrible violent crimes and carjackings in DC, have you all noticed an uptick in “weird” crimes like people destroying plants and flowers, destroying but not stealing packages and other strange behaviors. Is this also an outgrowth of the post COVID-19 rage? |
Lmao calling it post-covid rage. |
| No...where do you live? |
Drugs, synthetic drugs, fraying of social ties, and so forth. Covid didn't cause these things, but they mark a point in time. BC and AC if you will. |
In upper Northwest |
Makes sense. I admit I don’t think about how many people are using drugs in DC. |
I’m in the NE and I’ve been hearing about plants being uprooted or otherwise damaged in the neighborhood. It’s been chalked up to mental illness, drugs, and teenagers. |
Hm not the answer I expected. In some of the more dense areas that have seen a bigger uptick in crime and mentally ill homeless people hanging around, I could see this, but not upper NW. I am in Brightwood/Manor Park and this isn't happening. We don't even have much package theft. |
I feel like the destroying but not stealing packages is just a part of porch theft - they open the box, sometimes even very near the house, and realize it's some cheap bit of random Amazonia and just drop it wherever they are. I have heard about people digging up / stealing plants and flowers since I moved out of an apartment - I agree that it's very strange but not necessarily new behavior. |
| Is the guerrilla gardener still at it? |
| Not personally knock on wood but there are so many mentally ill homeless people this city refuses to do anything about. I'm not surprised they're doing weird shit. |
It's teenagers |
| Instead of 'othering' these crimes with hurtful labels such as "weird," we should be celebrating the wonderfully creative and vibrant range of crimes that we get to experience as part of city life. |
Well that takes the cake! Thanks for the smile.PP |
