Late start success stories in lax?

Anonymous
Kid plays AAA hockey and football now, previously played club soccer and hockey, and now wants to switch to playing AAA hockey plus lax as a preteen. If he starts lax now (age 11-13 range), can he make it to high school lax at a school with a strong team, or are we kidding ourselves? Happy to devote some time and money to lax clinics or privates, but can only manage one travel sport per year and for this year that's still hockey.

If he is a strong athlete he can absolutely!

Absolutely. Girls side but Denver starting goalie did not start playing lacrosse until her freshman year of high school and as a freshman in college was the Denver starter before helping lead them to national semi's as a sophomore.

My son didn't play organized lacrosse until the summer before freshman year of high school. Played two years of varsity. He just finished his first college season. Definitely do clinics and privates. Any time he can actually play a game would be a bonus.

Thank you. This is very encouraging.

A top athlete can excel regardless of when they start. Athletic skills transfer from sport to sport. A competitive athlete can do most anything

I recently read an interview with Roger Federer who said he didn’t enjoy practicing tennis till around age 12 and was not competing until he was 8 or 9. Imo he is the most graceful, intelligent athlete of all time, so there you have it.
No privates, clinics and parental pressure can make up for self motivation and desire to be on the top.

John Tucker didn't start playing until HS that wasn't a strong team. Two time AA at JHU and considered best midfielder until Gary Gait came along.

If a kid plays basketball or even football before venturing into lacrosse they will have an easier transition. For FOGOs, wrestling is a great starting point.

I've heard/seen that hockey is the most similar and transferable sport to lacrosse of any sport?

Of course OP mine did this.

Never played at all before trying out for his high school which went to state yearly ie great team. Varsity all four years. Division 1 college.

My only caveat is my kid is super self motivated he would go in our backyard and practice himself for hours at a time.

Mine did not do private lessons or year round because we as a family do not believe in that.

Any coordinated kid can play Lax boys grow later.
