Are AF1s still a thing for teens?

Anonymous
It is my oldest's birthday. He asked for two pairs of shoes. First a pair of AF1 all white to replace the ones he has (which are a year old and look destroyed) and a pair of Mid Top Jordans that my youngest one showed him and he liked a lot. My oldest will stop using a shoe if he sees others not using the style anymore, but he is just not aware of what shoes are in. My youngest told me AF1 are out, even though some kids still wear them. I just don't want to spend $100 or whatever on shoes he may stop wearing. Are there other all white Nike shoes that are in fashion right now?

Wow. My 18 and 13 year old are not in circles where sneakers are ever "out". They just wear the shoes. Maybe tell your teen that if he stops wearing his shoes before they're used, he'll have to buy his next pair himself?

Yes. Almost every teenage boy is into Air Force Ones.

You know the shoes will only last a year or less so just get him the ones he was asking for. It's a short term commitment.

No, Jordan’s and blazers.

Jordan mid 1s are also not on the same level as highs and lows. Depending on the circle he runs in, I would make sure he gets the right style.

Oh barf. I get that kids want to fit in, but seriously, if having shoes that are just a tiny bit outside of the latest and greatest cause issues in "the circles he runs in", I would spend some time reexamining life priorities and the messages I'm sending in my parenting.

part of the job of a parent is helping their child succeed in all aspects of life. growing up is tough enough without adding on the burden of not fitting in due to the clothes/shoes a kid wears, especially when the parent can afford the items.

should kids be teased because of what they wear? of course not! but it's been happening for years and i see no end in sight. it's irresponsible to have the ability to provide for your child to make their life easier and more comfortable but to not do it in order to teach them or "teach" others a lesson.

Some people choose their shoes based on friends' attitudes toward shoes.

To answer your question, no, AF1s are not still a thing. Dunks, Jordans, and Blazers are more popular.

Interesting. I just went through this with my DDs who are very much into fashion. They were adamant that Jordan's were in for both boys and girls but that only girls wore blazers and dunks. I guess it's different at every HS.

OP here, good point. It doesn't matter how much the shoes are, they will be destroyed in a year.

My 15 yo old son wears AF1s still. He’s very concerned with fashion trends so I assume he’s not just out of the loop. I’m sure there’s more than one acceptable brand/style of shoes though. At any rate, what matters is that your child like them. Get him what he likes. Shoes are replaced often so it’s not worth getting hung up on.
