When do travel teams tell you the cost and the time commitment?

At tryouts? Or can you find out before the tryouts? Why is it such a black box?

Its usually on the website

They should give you the details before asking you to commit. Some list it on a website. From experience, be prepared to pay more than what they tell you. And depending on the team/sport, they may practice less or more. In other words, be ready to be flexible to their changes.

What is the reason for not just publishing the info?

Most do, but are terrible at maintaining their websites so it’s not always easy to find.

Also varies depending on tournament costs and field/gym availability.

And plan on them changing everything at the last minute a lot.

Also some will expect you (unwritten expectation) to have a private hitting/batting lessons with them or another coach.

I coach a travel team. It’s probably because each team will do things a little differently in terms of how many tournaments they might enter, specialty instructors they might hire, etc.

Depends on the sport, age, and type of team IME. We’ve always been provided this info at tryouts and/or when kid is offered a roster spot.

Our travel coaches basically tell us nothing. They think so highly of themselves that they won’t even give an estimate on number of out of town tournaments. We should have realized it was a huge red flag with respect to communication and run the other way. I understand not being able to give exact costs. But team fees, number of tournaments within driving distance, number of tournaments where on would reasonably fly etc. seems pretty obvious.

Sport dependent, but in our soccer club, this is the first year that we received a letter detailing practice expectations throughout the year and which tournaments each team was expected to attend. The letter went out to the teams in the early spring and then went to everyone who registered for tryouts. It was shockingly helpful and I don’t know why it took them so long to start doing this. It really helped with planning.

Wow- this is not our experience. We got an email over the weekend that gave practice schedule starting in August, every tournament and location until June, camp dates, uniform ordering, and access to TeamSnap. It is super organized.
